The 8th Gate

A new commemorative plaza on the eastern edge of old Damascus, where a vehicular roundabout had become an unwalkable scar between two heritage gates. The brief: return the surface to people, the ground to shade, and the line of the avenue to ceremony.

A grid of forty mature plane trees was set on a permeable stone surface, watered through a buried drip rig. The central axis runs from the inner gate to a new shallow reflecting basin — the same line the original avenue followed before the roundabout was cut.

Local volcanic basalt for the perimeter, hand-cut Damascene limestone for the inner panels, and seasoned Lebanese cedar for the pergola spines that meet the inner gate. Water from a recovered municipal main, filtered before basin entry.

The plaza now carries a daily evening crowd that uses it as a passage, a meeting place, and a play surface for the children of the neighbourhood. Surface temperature on a 38°C August afternoon is 11°C lower than the asphalt that previously stood there.
